    • Central ProvinceLocated in the central highlands, this province is famous for its cool climate, misty mountains, and sprawling tea plantations. Kandy is a major cultural and religious center, home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. The province also includes Nuwara Eliya (often called “Little England” due to its colonial-era bungalows and golf courses) and Matale, known for its spice gardens.
    • Eastern ProvinceThis is a highly diverse, multi-ethnic province (home to Moors, Tamils, and Sinhalese) known for its beautiful, largely untouched coastline. Trincomalee boasts one of the largest natural harbors in the world and is a hotspot for scuba diving and whale watching. The province is also home to Arugam Bay, globally recognized as one of the best surfing beaches, and features vast lagoons and ancient reservoirs.
    • North Central ProvinceThis province is the cradle of Sri Lanka’s ancient civilization and the heart of the “Cultural Triangle.” It is home to the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, both UNESCO World Heritage sites filled with massive stupas, ruined palaces, and giant Buddha statues. The landscape is characterized by the dry zone and hundreds of ancient, massive man-made reservoirs (called “tanks”) built by early Sinhalese kings to support agriculture.
    • North Western ProvinceKnown as the “Coconut Triangle,” this province is heavily agricultural and plays a massive role in the country’s coconut and rubber production. It features a mix of dry zone landscapes and coastal areas. Puttalam, a major district within the province, is famous for its vast salt pans, limestone deposits, and the beautiful Dutch Bay and Kalpitiya peninsula, which is a premier spot for kitesurfing and dolphin watching.
    • Northern ProvinceLocated at the tip of the island, this province is predominantly Tamil and has a deeply distinct culture, cuisine, and Hindu heritage compared to the rest of the country. Jaffna is known for its historic forts, lush palmyra palm trees, and delicious tropical fruits. The province features stunning lagoons, islands accessible by causeway, and a rich history that is currently seeing a resurgence in tourism after the end of the civil war.
    • Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is a lush, tropical province famous for two main things: gems and Adam’s Peak. Ratnapura is literally translated to “City of Gems” and is the center of Sri Lanka’s gem mining industry (producing sapphires, rubies, and topazes). The province is also home to Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), a towering mountain sacred to multiple religions, which draws thousands of pilgrims and hikers, especially during the pilgrimage season from December to May. It also contains parts of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized biodiversity hotspot.
    • Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province is the hub of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, famous for its golden sandy beaches, world-class surfing spots (like Mirissa and Weligama), and whale watching. It is also rich in history, most notably the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort, a beautifully preserved 17th-century Dutch fortification. The province is also home to Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, which are famous for leopard and elephant sightings.
    • Uva ProvinceUva is a rugged, mountainous province bordered by the central highlands and the southern plains. It is famous for its high-quality tea production, spectacular waterfalls (like Dunhinda and Ravana Falls), and the scenic town of Ella. Ella has become a major backpacker hub, famous for the Nine Arches Bridge, the Ravana Ella cave, and hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.
    • Western ProvinceThis is the most urbanized, densely populated, and economically developed province in Sri Lanka. It serves as the commercial and administrative heart of the country. Colombo, the largest city, is a bustling metropolis featuring a mix of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and vibrant street life. The province also includes the suburbs of Gampaha and the coastal district of Kalutara, known for its beaches and religious sites.

10 sensational hotel baths with a view

Noka Camp’s five stilted villas, including one villa specially designed for families, are perched atop a 100ft cliff, overlooking the winding Palala River below and the endless bush ahead. The villas are joined by the main lodge consisting of a dining room, bar, lounge area and sprawling outdoor terrace. The camp is entirely off-grid, self-generated all energy by a bespoke, 250m solar walkway.

Small bells hang on the wall perhaps in homage to the Abbey bells, behind a white reception while the rest of the room has funky artworks, as does most of the hotel. Sometimes it’s Regency-style, sometimes faces obscured by a primary colour and bizarrely even animals dressed in military costumes. In much of the communal area, carpets are decorated with butterflies; sometimes there are prints and maps. A lot is going on.

Imagine sinking into some bubbles looking out across an azure sea, or enjoying a soak with a chilled glass of champagne over a cityscape.

Sure, there have always been tourists behaving badly ever since the first tourist existed. But, in an age where travel has become so easy and ubiquitous for so many for the first time, those problems have amplified a thousandfold. Destinations didn’t have the necessary infrastructure to handle the flood of tourists cheap travel brought.

From flouting rules and refusing to wear a mask to hosting parties, coughing on others, and just generally being selfish, the pandemic has shown us that the world is filled with more assholes than we thought. But, despite all of that, when it comes to the future of travel, I think the pandemic is going to make it better.

All rooms come with comfy Hypnos beds with luxury Egyptian cotton linen, spacious bathrooms, Nespresso coffee machines, highspeed Wi-Fi and several channels on a 40” flat-screen TV.  The mini-bar comes stocked with some drinks that are included in the room rate.

As we yearn to reconnect with friends, family, and the world at large, I think that what we’ve gone through has also given many of us a chance to reflect on all the things we took for granted: the outdoors, community, neighborhood restaurants, and the arts.
